Major difference in termination of cat 5 and cat 6 cables: One of the major differences between the cat 5 and cat 6, apart from the obvious data transfer speeds, is in the nature of their outer sheath. In cat 5 cables, it doesn't matter how much sheath you have removed in order to terminate it, but in case of cat 6 cables, the sheath is dielectric and matters a lot in the overall strength of the signal. If you cut it more than the required amount, it can lead to the occurrence of echoes due to the change in impedance. IDC termination: Before terminating the cables, you should have some idea about IDC termination. IDC refers to 'Insulation Displacement Connection' and currently the most recommended and most widely used method for cable termination. This is the method which is recognized by ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A for cable termination procedures. Punch down connections: The termination connections made under the IDC termination process are referred to as the punch down connections. The reason being; it uses a punch down tool to make the connections in the terminal block. However, punch-down connections are much better than the other types of connections because they ensure a strong connection between the terminating clip and the copper conductor. In making punch-down connections for the Cat-6 cables, there are many factors that you have to keep in mind; for instance, the correct order of punch down connections. Incorrect order can easily lead to serious interference between the wires. The actual termination procedure: The cable termination procedure under IDC method is pretty much simple. Use a sheath removal tool such as electrician snips or ringing tool, and remove the sheath for the recommended length. The correct length of sheath removal is different for different IDC hardware manufacturers and depends on things like size and type of copper cable, etc. Always make sure that you have separated all the binder groups before termination. This will help you to identify all the groups later on in case of any fault. Take out the cable pairs from each and every binder group, but make sure that the pairs should not interfere or cross each other. Every connection should have the equal tension. Terminal blocks, such as 66 and 110 style are also used in the termination process of many cables. Otherwise, you can use the modular plugs for the termination; for example, RJ45 and RJ11. Considering the importance and the complexity of network cable termination services, it makes sense to avail these services only from the experienced and skilled networking professionals.
